US Bishops Want Biden to Stop Taking Holy Communion!

Bill Sheridan

Catholic Bishops may press President Joe Biden, a professed Catholic, to stop taking Holy Communion if he insists on publicly supporting abortion rights.

According to the Associated Press, when US Catholic bishops hold their next national meeting in June, they’ll be deciding whether to send a tougher-than-ever message to President Joe Biden and other Catholic politicians — Don’t receive Communion if you persist in public advocacy of abortion rights.

At issue is a document that will be prepared for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) by its Committee on Doctrine, with the aim of clarifying the Church’s stance on an issue that has repeatedly vexed the bishops in recent decades. It’s taken on new urgency now, in the eyes of many bishops, because Biden, who is only the second Catholic president — is the first to hold that office while espousing clear-cut support for abortion rights.

Such a stance, by a public figure, is “a grave moral evil,” according to Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who chairs the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities and believes it’s necessary to publicly rebuke Biden on the issue.

“Because President Biden is Catholic, it presents a unique problem for us,” Naumann told The Associated Press. “It can create confusion. How can he say he’s a devout Catholic and he’s doing these things that are contrary to the church’s teaching?”

The document, if approved, would make it clear that the USCCB’s view is that Biden and other Catholic public figures with similar viewpoints on abortion rights should not present themselves for Communion, Naumann said.

In accordance with existing USCCB policy, it would still leave decisions on withholding Communion up to individual bishops. In Biden’s case, the top prelates of the jurisdictions where he frequently worships — Bishop W. Francis Malooly of Wilmington, Delaware, and Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, DC — have thus far made it clear that Biden is welcome to receive Communion at churches they oversee. However, this is under existing policy and predates the declaration, should it come in June.

The document-in-the-works results from a decision in November by the USCCB’s president, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, to form a working group to address the “complex and difficult situation” posed by Biden’s stances on abortion and other issues that differ from official church teaching. Before disbanding, the group proposed the drafting of a new document addressing the issue of Communion — a project assigned to the doctrine committee.

The committee has not released details about its work. Naumann said the matter will be discussed at the USCCB’s meeting in June, and the bishops will vote on whether the committee should continue working on the document so it could be officially released later.

A two-thirds majority would be needed for work to proceed, Naumann said. But even critics of the initiative, such as Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky, predict the initiative will win over with tremendous approval.

Stowe is among a relatively small group of US bishops who worry that the USCCB’s emphasis on abortion is undercutting Pope Francis’ exhortations for the Church to also stress such issues as climate change, immigration, and inequality. Stowe also worries that the US bishops are missing a chance to find common ground with Biden on such issues.

“If a politician is targeted as a negative example by his own church, that sets a sad context in which the church can deal with this Catholic president,” Stowe said. “It contributes to the polarization of the church and of society.”

Nonetheless, the bishops wanting to send a tough message to Biden are determined to press ahead.

“There’s a growing sense of urgency,” said San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. “Abortion is not just one among many important issues. It’s a direct attack on human life.”

There are even some in the Church who think barring Biden from Communion because of his stance on abortion does not go far enough. American Cardinal Raymond Burke has broached the possibility of Catholicism’s ultimate sanction. He says politicians who “publicly and obstinately” support abortion are “apostates” who not only should be barred from receiving Communion but deserve excommunication.

What do you think? Should Biden be barred from taking Communion as a Catholic because of his views on abortion rights? Please reply using the comments below!

  1. Who needs the child molesters backing. They need to work on their own self

    1. I think that he should be barred at least from communion anyone who openly chooses the killing of babies should be barred just as if Joe Biden hhad shot and killedd them personally

  2. Biden is merely a nominal Catholic in name only. The man has no moral value compass at all. Kill 2.7 million jobs lie about the corona virus murder babies now even in foreign countries it’s all in a moral-less days work. Doesn’t phase him at all. It’s all the same. I say excommunicate him and send a real message to those like him such as Nancy Pilosi. Disregard the teachings of the church and face the consequences.

  3. Never really did understand how they could be such pro abortionist while at the same time say they a such staunch practicing Catholics.
ALWAYS did seem a tad bit hypocritical of both people to say the least.

  4. It seems politics has now found its way into the church. What else is new. As a Catholic myself, I have wondered how politicians like Biden AND Pelosi could receive the sacraments with the positions they were taking on abortion.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of this next meeting

    1. They can because they are liars and the truth is not in them. They like their Father are first class liars. They don’t even know how to spell Christ. There is no mercy or grace in them, their only love is for money and power.

  5. Advocating for abortion or promoting it in any way puts that person in a state of sin. They should not be allowed to take communion. They should also not be allowed to use confession to circumvent the censure for their position. Repentance requires a change of belief and a change of action.

  6. People should make their feelings known by their own actions. I will no longer give to any diocesan collections and will only support my own parish’s needs. If everyone did that, you’d see how quickly the church would start to uphold its own teachings. It’s sad that in this day and age even the church and pope have no integrity whatsoever.

  7. The land is POLLUTED by the innocent blood spilt. YHVH is not blinded nor tolerant of this abomination. He will deal with it sooner than later.

  8. It goes much deeper than just being pro abortion. There are all the lies and evil deception being perpetrated by Biden and the Democrats in their effort to take over and destroy our democratic republic and replace it with communism.

  9. According to Proverbs, one one the 7 things that Lord hates is, the shedding of innocent blood. Genesis also says, “as long as the earth remains, Seedtime and Harvest. Therefore there is a logic reason for all of the Mass Shootings our country has experienced. Here is, if we continue to allow the mass killings of innocent lives through Legalized Abortion. Then we can expect and prepare for more Mass killings in our schools, communities, and our country. Would somebody please share this Message with President Biden. Thank you.

  10. Biden should be excommunicated, as long as he supports abortion. It is the Church’s responsibility, otherwise the Church is condoning murder. This excommunication should also apply to Pelosi, and all other Catholic politicians, promoting abortion as a policy.

  11. Those so called catholics are the biggest hypocrites. The are a mockery to real christian Americans. The hate and murder they advocate for will get them in the end. Their real judge will make the decision.

  12. Ban Biden from receiving communion because he is unfit to be a Catholic and President,if he aborts human unborn life which is against the Catholic religion! He should be dealt with immediately to stop evil in its tracks and save the many millions of unborn lives! Biden should be ashamed of himself for doing this as President of the United States of America and the free world!

  13. Can’t the Catholic church ex-communicate the idiot I don’t know how Catholics work but surely he can be expelled but on the bright side of things when Biden passes away he’ll have to answer to God for breaking the Commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill!

  14. JMJ
It seems to me Biden, Pelosi should have to choice. the Bishops knowing that they are for abortions, etc. should refuse to give them Holy Communion “bless” them only until they publicly denounce their views and laws on abortions.

  15. Jesus always catered toward sinners and when He said take this for this is my body and take this for this is my blood, I don’t believe He said that sinners, regardless of their sins, shpuld not receive it. Seems like those of us with sin are the ones who need to receive His body and blood most. And I am very pro-life and disappointed in President Biden reversing hmself on his pro’life stance. In fact, I helped start a Pregnancy Services Cenrter and served on its board for a number of years, running fund raisers to continue its work.

  16. Biden and the Progressive Social Marxists who are now in power are anti-God and anti-Religion of any kind. This was clearly shown at the Democratic Convention. All aspects of faith was removed from their program and they promoted agnostic secularism. While in contrast, the Republican Convention upheld the faith of all Americans and clearly showed it in the speakers who they selected. The Progressive Social Marxists ( New Democrats) clearly show by their actions that they hold The Government as their religion and their god. I do not believe even a small percentage of Americans want a Totalitarian Government that controls every aspect of our lives! That takes away our religious freedoms and tells us what they want us to believe. Stand up to this fellow Americans!

  17. All life matters. Truth is Truth and to be honest, we need to often be called to repent. Presidents and people like unto myself need to repent. Catholic or not catholics need to yell from the walls of truth—all Lives matter.

  18. Catholic politicians who aggressively support abortion should be excommunicated. The Church should issue one more warning, giving these politicians 14 days to denounce abortion as premeditated murder or be excommunicated.

  19. Of course Biden should be refused communion. He couldn’t even reference God last week in hisNatl. Day of Prayer speech because he didn’t want to offend his “woke “ socialist followers. He uses his Catholic religion as a tool to win Catholic votes & to show what a moral man he is. So moral, he was secretly sleeping with his Jill, while she was STILL married . Biden is nothing but a hypocrite!!!!!

  20. Biden has violated so many matters of Faith which are out of discussion that he cannot be accepted as Member of the Catholic Church, nor many other truly Christian denominations. As long as he maintains the same Anti-Christian and Anti-Human heresies, he has to be expelled from the Catholic -and general Christian- community. THAT MEANS EXVOMMUNICATION!

  21. Biden & Pelosi should denounce their proabortion stance and promise not to ever commit those mortal sins before they can recieve the host. If they don’t and continue to defy God’s law, they should be excommunicated as they hold great positions that symbolize power. As such they are supposed to be held accountable for their actions.
