Top GOP Strategist Says Trump Will Be the 2024 Nominee

A well-known Republican political strategist tells The Hill that Donald J. Trump will be the GOP’s nominee for 2024.

Richard Hanania, the president and founder of the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, recently told Hill.TV that he expects former President Trump to be the Republican nominee for president in 2024.

Hanania said that while political observers have consistently predicted the end of Trump’s political career — from criticizing the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for being captured during the Vietnam War to his involvement in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol — the party has stuck with him, making the former president seemingly more in control of the party than ever.

“The question becomes. what’s going to happen between now and 2024?” he said in the interview. “People say a lot can happen in three years – a lot has happened in the last six years, and nothing has ever changed.”

Hanania said no other potential GOP candidate has emerged as a clear second place holder to Trump in early 2024 election polls. A single candidate could rival Trump, however, if they are the main alternative and can consolidate support, avoiding a field divided among more than 10 other candidates like in 2016, Hanania added.

Running again and possibly winning would fulfill Trump’s craving for attention, Hanania went on to say, arguing that Trump likely wants more attention than what he’s getting from living at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

“I can’t believe that this man, who we think his entire world revolves around being the center of the world’s attention, is happy with that and won’t take another run at the presidency. It’s just hard to see,” Hanania said.

The question of if Trump will or will not run again is surely on the minds of every Republican voter, just as it is GOP elected officials. Without the former president in the picture, Republicans expect a free-for-all 2024 primary race that will draw candidates from across the country, ranging from senators to governors to former Trump administration officials.

“You have to assume he’s not going to run again. And if he does, you reassess at that time,” said Alex Conant, a GOP consultant who worked on Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s 2016 presidential campaign. “Lay the groundwork now, but if he does run, your plans will likely be delayed for four years.”

However, as Hanania points out, recent events show how Trump still has an iron grip on the base of the party. If that remains unchanged, Trump vying for the White House a second time could seem inevitable.

This “will he, or won’t he” is a unique scenario for the GOP. Defeated presidents and party nominees usually fade into the background after an election, clearing the way for the next wave of leaders. But Trump has stayed in the mix, setting up his own political operation and saying that he will decide whether to run for president again after the 2022 midterm elections.

What do you think? Will Trump be the Republican candidate in 2024? Should he be? Please reply using the comments below!
